Print Quality Issues
Streaks or Lines on Prints
Applicable to: InkJet, LaserJet
Vertical or horizontal lines appearing on your printed pages can be caused by several issues, including clogged printheads, low ink, or debris in the paper path.
For InkJet Printers:
- Run the printhead cleaning utility:
- From the printer control panel, go to Setup > Tools > Clean Printhead
- Or use the HP Smart App: Select your printer > Settings > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead
- Print a diagnostic page to check if the issue is resolved
- If the problem persists, run a second cleaning cycle
- For stubborn issues, try "Deep Clean" from the HP Smart App
For LaserJet Printers:
- Remove and gently shake the toner cartridge to redistribute toner
- Check for debris or paper dust inside the printer
- Print a cleaning page from the printer menu
- If vertical lines persist, the drum or transfer roller may need replacement
Prevention Tips:
- Use high-quality paper appropriate for your printer
- Keep ink/toner levels above 15%
- Run maintenance routines regularly
- Keep printer in a clean, dust-free environment
Faded or Light Printing
Applicable to: InkJet, LaserJet
Faded prints occur when text and images appear lighter than normal. This is often caused by low ink/toner levels, incorrect print settings, or clogged nozzles.
For All Printer Types:
- Check ink or toner levels and replace cartridges if low
- Verify print quality settings in the print dialog:
- Select "Normal" or "Best" quality instead of "Draft"
- Increase the DPI setting if available
- Make sure you're using the correct paper type in settings
For InkJet Printers:
- Run printhead cleaning and alignment utilities
- Check if any cartridges need replacing (even if not empty)
For LaserJet Printers:
- Remove toner cartridge and gently shake side-to-side (not up-down)
- Check toner density settings in printer menu
Connectivity Problems
Printer Offline
Applicable to: All HP PrintersIf your printer shows as "Offline" on your computer, it means your device can't communicate with the printer. This could be due to connectivity issues, printer status, or driver problems.
Step-by-Step Solution:
- Check if your printer is powered on and ready (no error lights)
- Verify that it's connected to the same network as your computer:
- For wireless printers: Check Wi-Fi connection on printer control panel
- For wired printers: Ensure Ethernet cable is securely connected
- Restart both your printer and computer
- On Windows:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners
- Select your printer and click "Open queue"
- In the printer window, click "Printer" in the menu and uncheck "Use Printer Offline" if it's checked
- On Mac:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners
- Right-click your printer and select "Reset printing system"
- Re-add your printer
If the Problem Persists:
- Try reinstalling the printer driver from the HP Support website
- Check for firmware updates for your printer
- Try connecting via a different method (USB instead of Wi-Fi)
